I hope everyone enjoyed the bit of snow we got over the weekend! We have received another 100 tiger tokens so be looking for a DOJO message about the reward! We are also in need of big jars of play dough for each student if you are interested in donating to the cause:) We need about 10 more tubs. Also, parents who are willing to come in to work with students one-on-one.
In reading, these past weeks we have been reading and comparing books about gingerbread people. :) Using strategies such as predicting, visualizing, retelling and connecting stories.
In math, we are starting to use strategies to add numbers and finish up measuring. We will start our unit on shapes this week and next week.
In writing, we started a new unit on teaching books. We are currently learning how to teach our readers "HOW TO" do something by writing in steps. Later we will write teaching book that inform others about a topic.
Cold Weather
With the weather getting colder, please remember to send students with coats, hats, gloves, etc. We will try and have outside recess as much as possible. If the temperature or wind chill is below freezing we will not go outside, otherwise we will be outside.
Stewart Little and Family Reading Night
Every family should have received a copy of Stewart Little. This is a school wide book club. I hope you will read this at home together. There will be a celebration in February at Family Reading Night. There will be lots of crafts, games, and prizes. Mark your calendar for February 4th at 6:30.
Progress Reports:These were delayed last week. So they will be coming home this week in your child's data notebook. Please look these over and if you have questions please do not hesitate to ask. The valuable information is located inside the data notebook. You will notice that students information that they have mastered will be circled. Take note of the info not circled (alphabet, sounds, numbers, counting, and sight words were assessed this semester). As far as writing goes the students were assessed based on a narrative writing located in the back of the notebooks. Area's looked at were; did they tell a story with a beginning, middle and end, add details, could you read their writing, did they use sounds when writing, spacing, capital letters at the beginning, were sight words spelled correctly, and did they draw a picture with their story. Reading levels were also indicated in their notebook with specific skills that go with that level. I hope the information will help you when looking at their progress report. Remember that we are still learning and will reassess each skill again at 3rd quarter and if I had major concerns about your child I will contact you personally to discuss their progress. We will also have informal conferences again in March.
*** I will also be sending home another copy of your child's sight word list that they are currently working on. The pizza celebration will be Monday February 1st. That is for all children who have mastered through list 5! :)
